From Data to Decisions: Building Better Analytics

The hardest part of analytics is often not analysis. It is translating a vague question into a decision that can be measured.

Start with the decision

Ask: What will someone do differently if this analysis is correct? If the answer is unclear, the analysis may not have a useful purpose yet.

Separate facts from interpretation

A good analytical narrative distinguishes observed behaviour from hypotheses about why it happened. This improves trust and makes follow-up investigation easier.

Design for action

A useful analytical output should make the next action obvious. Sometimes that is a product change. Sometimes it is a request for better data. Sometimes the right decision is to do nothing.

Build reusable thinking

Frameworks, definitions, SQL patterns, dashboards, and measurement specifications can turn one analytical project into organisational capability.

That is where analytics becomes more than reporting.
